- Adjourn : A motion to adjourn a legislative chamber or a committee, if passed, ends that day's session.
- Affidavit : A written statement of facts confirmed by the oath of the party making it, before a notary or officer having authority to administer oaths.
- Affiliated company : means a company in the same corporate system as a parent, an industrial insured, or a member organization by virtue of common ownership, control, operation, or management. See Florida Statutes 628.901
- Allegation : something that someone says happened.
- Amendment : A proposal to alter the text of a pending bill or other measure by striking out some of it, by inserting new language, or both. Before an amendment becomes part of the measure, thelegislature must agree to it.
- Annuity : A periodic (usually annual) payment of a fixed sum of money for either the life of the recipient or for a fixed number of years. A series of payments under a contract from an insurance company, a trust company, or an individual. Annuity payments are made at regular intervals over a period of more than one full year.
- Answer : The formal written statement by a defendant responding to a civil complaint and setting forth the grounds for defense.
- Appeal : A request made after a trial, asking another court (usually the court of appeals) to decide whether the trial was conducted properly. To make such a request is "to appeal" or "to take an appeal." One who appeals is called the appellant.
- Appellate : About appeals; an appellate court has the power to review the judgement of another lower court or tribunal.
- Articles of incorporation : includes original, amended, and restated articles of incorporation, articles of consolidation, and articles of merger, and all amendments thereto, including documents designated by the laws of this state as charters, and, in the case of a foreign corporation, documents equivalent to articles of incorporation in the jurisdiction of incorporation. - Assessment year : means the 12-month period, which may begin on the first day of any calendar quarter, whether January 1, April 1, July 1, or October 1, as specified in an order issued by the office directing insurers to pay an assessment to the association. See Florida Statutes 631.54
- Assets : (1) The property comprising the estate of a deceased person, or (2) the property in a trust account.
- Association : means the Florida Insurance Guaranty Association, Incorporated. See Florida Statutes 631.54
- Association : means the Florida Life and Health Insurance Guaranty Association created in…. See Florida Statutes 631.714
- Attachment : A procedure by which a person's property is seized to pay judgments levied by the court.
- Beneficiary : A person who is entitled to receive the benefits or proceeds of a will, trust, insurance policy, retirement plan, annuity, or other contract. Source: OCC
- Bequest : Property gifted by will.
- Board : means the board of directors of the plan. See Florida Statutes 631.814
- Board of directors : means the group of persons vested with the management of the affairs of the corporation irrespective of the name by which such group is designated, including, but not limited to, managers or trustees. See Florida Statutes 617.01401
- Bylaws : means the code or codes of rules adopted for the regulation or management of the affairs of the corporation irrespective of the name or names by which such rules are designated. See Florida Statutes 617.01401
- Captive insurance company : means a domestic insurer established under this part. See Florida Statutes 628.901
- Captive reinsurance company : means a reinsurance company that is formed and licensed under this part and is wholly owned by a qualifying reinsurance parent company. See Florida Statutes 628.901
- Charity : An agency, institution, or organization in existence and operating for the benefit of an indefinite number of persons and conducted for educational, religious, scientific, medical, or other beneficent purposes.
- Complaint : A written statement by the plaintiff stating the wrongs allegedly committed by the defendant.
- Continuance : Putting off of a hearing ot trial until a later time.
- Contract : A legal written agreement that becomes binding when signed.
- Contractual obligations : means any obligation under covered health care policies. See Florida Statutes 631.814
- Controlled unaffiliated business : means a company:
(a) That is not in the corporate system of a parent and affiliated companies;
(b) That has an existing contractual relationship with a parent or affiliated company; and
(a) Has gross assets in excess of $50 million;
(b) Procures insurance through the use of a full-time employee of the insured who acts as an insurance manager or buyer or through the services of a person licensed as a property and casualty insurance agent, broker, or consultant in such person's state of domicile;
(c) Has at least 100 full-time employees; and
